ESTATE AND FAMILY PLANNING FOR AGING PARENTS
Meeting with Clients and Family in a Client’s Home
When it is difficult for a client to come to our office for discussion of estate planning, we meet with that client and family members, if they would like, in the client’s home. That is often easier for a client with some disability or mobility difficulties and they feel more at home and more secure there.
Things to Consider for Parents as They Age
We often meet with a parent or parents and family members who are concerned that an aging parent or parents need to update their wills or other documents. The parent is the client. We then meet with the parent and include family members, if that is the desire of the parent.
The basic documents we suggest are:
1. A Will that carries out the current wishes of the parent and has up to date language. Note that a beneficiary change of name through a marriage or a death of a family member may not require a Will to be changed but should be reviewed.
2. A Power of Attorney with clauses that carry out the wishes of the parent and allows action by the Power of Attorney if an extended nursing home stay or medicaid qualification might be necessary.
