Private Adoption (continued)
If the natural father gives his Consent, that can sometimes be signed before the birth. If he does not give his Consent, then there are specific requirements that he must meet immediately after birth or his rights will be subject to being terminated.
Great care is necessary in how all this is handled. Whitmore & Associates coordinates this process.
The prospective adoptive parents would want to have a pediatrician of their choice give a newborn a thorough physical so that they know, as best they can, the health of the child. The child is not to be placed in the home of the prospective adoptive parents until the court approves that placement, through an Order for Temporary Custody. The goal is to accomplished this fairly soon after the birth, but until that approval, the prospective adoptive parents are not to take possession of the child.
After Court approval of the placement of the child in the home of the prospective adoptive parents, the adoption process including the hearing is fairly similar to the other types of adoption. The agency cost is significantly higher and varies somewhat with the agency chosen to do the home study and supervision.
If the child’s birthplace is not in Indiana significant, other statutory requirements must be complied with, including approval of both Indiana’s and the other state’s administrators of interstate adoptions. The interstate adoptions are more complicated and take more time and coordination, but are clearly “doable” with patience.
